Últimamente, en respuesta a la propagación (y amenaza) de las criptomonedas, los bancos centrales han puesto en marcha planes para emitir su dinero fiduciario en forma digital. Según el BPI, el 86% de ellos está investigando activamente las monedas digitales de banco central (CBDC), el 60% está experimentando con ellas y el 14% tiene proyectos piloto. Sus partidarios afirman que las CBDC ayudarán a los bancos centrales a gestionar mejor el sistema de pagos, la inflación y la economía. Pero también es probable que haya motivos nefastos, relacionados con la "Teoría Monetaria Moderna" y medios más directos de financiar a gobiernos despilfarradores.
