Muchos países han impuesto recientemente sanciones económicas a Rusia. ¿Es esto apropiado? ¿Son eficaces? En "Las raíces de la guerra" (1966), Ayn Rand sostenía que "la esencia de la política exterior del capitalismo es el libre comercio -es decir, la abolición de las barreras comerciales, de los aranceles protectores, de los privilegios especiales-, la apertura de las rutas comerciales del mundo al libre intercambio internacional y a la competencia entre los ciudadanos particulares de todos los países que tratan directamente entre sí". Pero también se opuso al comercio de Estados Unidos con sus enemigos mortales (por ejemplo, la URSS). En esta sesión analizaremos si las sanciones económicas están justificadas y cuándo, así como sus efectos típicos (para bien o para mal). Al igual que las medidas proteccionistas, las sanciones suelen perjudicar más al que las impone que al que las recibe.
