Muchos países han impuesto recientemente sanciones económicas a Rusia. ¿Es esto apropiado? ¿Son eficaces? En "Las raíces de la guerra" (1966), Ayn Rand sostenía que "la esencia de la política exterior del capitalismo es el libre comercio -es decir, la abolición de las barreras comerciales, de los aranceles protectores, de los privilegios especiales-, la apertura de las rutas comerciales del mundo al libre intercambio internacional y a la competencia entre los ciudadanos particulares de todos los países que tratan directamente entre sí". Pero también se opuso al comercio de Estados Unidos con sus enemigos mortales (por ejemplo, la URSS). Del mismo modo que el egoísmo racional es la única ética adecuada para guiar la vida de un individuo, es la única guía ética adecuada para las relaciones de un Estado con otros Estados. La esencia de Estados Unidos son sus libertades, sus derechos y su sistema capitalista; en consecuencia, el interés propio de Estados Unidos reside en preservar esos valores, sin sacrificarlos ni renunciar a ellos, y menos aún por motivos supuestamente "humanitarios" (altruistas), simplemente para ayudar a extranjeros victimizados. Estados Unidos debe identificar racionalmente a sus aliados y enemigos, y actuar en consecuencia. Nunca debe proporcionar defensa nacional a otras naciones que en su mayoría pretenden ser soberanas. El egoísmo racional no justifica ni el pacifismo, ni el aislacionismo, ni el imperialismo. Estados Unidos no puede preservar su esencia ni sus instituciones, ni encontrar de nuevo la manera de luchar y ganar sólo las guerras correctas, sin seguir el principio egoísta. Debe ser un modelo moral para el mundo, pero nunca su policía.
